Whitstable, Kent · The Complete Local Guide
The day-to-day guide to Whitstable, Kent, for visitors and locals: what is open right now, live tide times, where to eat oysters and drink, what's on this week, parking and trains, the phone numbers you actually need and the local schools.
Nearly all of this guide is open to everyone. A handful of figures are blurred as a sample. One free registration opens every one of them, here and on every Insider guide that follows.
Today in Whitstable
The weather, what is open and what is on this week, then the tides, The Street and the air quality. All of it refreshes every time you open the page.
Checking
Worked out from each venue's published opening hours in UK time, and refreshed every minute. Venues that do not publish regular hours, and those where sources disagree, are left out rather than guessed. Kitchens can close before the bar, and seaside hours change with the seasons, so call if it matters.
Loading tide times
The tide shapes the day here. High water brings the sea up the shingle; low water uncovers the mudflats and The Street at Tankerton. Swimming and kayaking are best when the tide is in, and paddleboards and inflatables can be carried out quickly on a falling tide with an offshore wind.
The Street: next low water --. The shingle spit runs about half a mile out from Tankerton beach and is only uncovered around low tide. The tide comes back fast and from both sides, and people are cut off every year, so turn back early and never swim near it. In an emergency call 999 and ask for the coastguard.
Tide times and sea temperature: Open-Meteo marine model for the sea off Whitstable, heights against mean sea level. For anything on the water, use the official Admiralty EasyTide. Safety advice from Whitstable RNLI.
Readings are modelled for Whitstable by Open-Meteo and refresh on every visit.
Waiting for the weather
Eat
Oyster bars, harbour huts, brunch cafes, Sunday roasts and a Michelin star at Seasalter, each with a call button and directions, and live opening hours wherever the place publishes them. New since 2025: Keller on Harbour Street and Tidehouse on Beach Walk.
Drink
The pub on the beach, backstreet locals, micropubs, craft beer, wine and cocktail bars, and seafront pubs in Tankerton and Seasalter. Each one has a call button, directions and live opening hours where they are published.

Ready-made days
Four ready-made routes through the town. Each stop is checked against today's opening hours, and when it is raining the indoor plan comes up first.
Things to do
Whitstable is compact: the harbour, Harbour Street, the beach and the alleys are all close together, with the castle and Tankerton a short walk east and Seasalter to the west. Much of the best of it is free.
Four-legged visitors
Two beaches open to dogs all year, slopes, woods and a long sea wall to walk, and plenty of pubs that welcome dogs inside.
Dogs must be supervised on the beach, and mess bagged and binned straight away. Where a lead is required it must be no longer than two metres. Canterbury City Council consulted on a replacement dog control order in 2026; the draft keeps the same seasonal beach bans at Tankerton and central Herne Bay.
After dark
Late evenings in Whitstable happen in the pubs and bars. A handful stay open to midnight or later at weekends. The last regular direct train from Victoria gets in at 23:58, so check the return before the evening starts.

28-30 High Street · until 11:30pm daily
The Wetherspoon in the old art deco cinema. Planning permission to stay open until 1am on Fridays and Saturdays was granted in June 2026, but the licence still had to be decided and its own page lists 11:30pm, so check on the night.
16-18 Oxford Street
The town-centre chippy, with space to eat in, open until 10pm every night. Cash only, with a cash machine opposite.
11 High Street · until 10pm

The last train back to Victoria leaves at 22:39 and the last direct one to St Pancras at 21:51. The taxi rank is on Railway Avenue; pre-booking is advised.

The local economy
Real prices from menus, venue sites and published reviews, cheapest first in each group, with the date of each source so you can see how fresh it is. A few are blurred; one free registration opens them.
Only prices we could trace to a menu, a venue's own site or a dated article are shown; nothing here is an estimate. Older menus may have moved on. Know a price that has changed? Tell us using the form at the foot of the page.

Kent is selective. Children register for the Kent Test in the summer term of Year 5 and sit it in September of Year 6; results come out in mid October, before secondary applications close on Monday 2 November 2026. A pass makes a child eligible for a grammar school, not certain of a place, and each school then ranks applicants by its own criteria. The grammar schools listed below are in Canterbury and Faversham. On inspections: Ofsted stopped giving single overall grades in September 2024, and its newer report cards grade each area separately, from Exceptional to Urgent improvement. Each school below shows its latest result and date.

Whitstable is 59 miles from London Victoria by rail. Off-peak there is a direct Southeastern train every hour from London Victoria, taking about 78 minutes, and a direct Southeastern Highspeed train every hour from St Pancras International, taking about 79 minutes. On a weekday, 41 direct trains run from Whitstable to London.
Gorrell Tank is the main town centre car park, at £3.80 an hour, with number plate cameras so you pay on exit. Middle Wall is £2.70 an hour, and Victoria Street, Gladstone Road and Shaftesbury Road are £1.90. Council car parks in the centre charge around the clock. Tankerton Road car park at Pier Avenue is free from October to March, and castle visitors park free for up to three hours.
The Street, a natural shingle spit about half a mile long, is only uncovered around low tide. The tide comes back quickly from both sides and people are cut off every year, so check the tide times first, turn back early and do not swim near it. In an emergency at sea or on the shore, call 999 and ask for the coastguard.
Wheelers Oyster Bar on the High Street has been trading since 1856. The Whitstable Oyster Company serves oysters from its own beds at the Royal Native Oyster Stores and runs The Lobster Shack and The Oyster Shed at the harbour. The Old Neptune, Pearson's Arms, Keller and the harbour huts serve them too.
The Old Neptune sits on the shingle of the beach. For real ale there are the Handsome Sam and Tankerton Arms micropubs and The Fountain, for craft beer The Twelve Taps, and for cocktails Pearson's Arms and Rock Lodge. The Ship Centurion is known for German beers and live sport.
Yes. The town beach and West Beach are open to dogs all year. The only seasonal ban is on Tankerton beach, from Pier Avenue to The Street, from 1 May to 30 September, when dogs must also be on a lead on the promenade alongside.
Whitstable has no A&E. The nearest is at the Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother Hospital in Margate (Ramsgate Road, CT9 4BG, 01843 225544), open 24 hours. For injuries that are not life-threatening, the Estuary View Urgent Treatment Centre in Whitstable is walk-in from 8am to 8pm every day, and the Kent and Canterbury Hospital urgent treatment centre is open 24 hours.
Kent is selective through the Kent Test. The grammar schools covered in this guide are Simon Langton Grammar School for Boys, Simon Langton Girls' Grammar School and Barton Court Grammar School in Canterbury, and Queen Elizabeth's Grammar School in Faversham. Kent Test results come out on Thursday 15 October 2026 and secondary applications close on Monday 2 November 2026.
Tankerton and West Beach, Whitstable's two designated bathing waters, were both rated Excellent by the Environment Agency for 2025. Lifeguards patrol Tankerton from May to September only; the town beach and West Beach are not patrolled. Swimming is best when the tide is in.
It is now held in September as the Whitstable Rocks Oyster Festival. The 2026 festival ran from Friday 11 to Sunday 13 September; 2027 dates have not yet been announced.
Nearly all of the guide is open to everyone. A handful of figures are blurred as a sample. Registering your email once, for free, opens every blurred figure on this device.
About this guide
Weather, daylight, air quality, tides and sea temperature come straight from Open-Meteo each time the page loads.
Prices come from menus, venue sites and published reviews, dated where they are older. Only the calculator's totals are estimates, built from those prices.
Tap any blurred figure and add your email. Every one opens, free, and stays open on this device.
Badges show what is open right now, from each venue's published hours. Where hours are not published or sources disagree, there is no badge rather than a guess.

Keep it accurate
Prices move, hours change with the seasons and new places open. If something here is wrong or missing, or you run a Whitstable business that should be listed, tell us and it will be checked and updated. You can also email hq@splitdecision.uk.
Source data and method. Live weather, daylight, air quality, tides and sea temperature come from Open-Meteo each time the page loads; tide times are modelled for the sea off Whitstable and are not for navigation. Venue addresses, phone numbers and opening hours come from each venue's own website, CAMRA's pub listings, the Good Food Guide, Harden's, Time Out, Kent Online and the Michelin Guide, and were last checked on 10 October 2026. Where a venue does not publish regular hours, or sources disagree, no open-now badge is shown. Prices come only from menus, venue sites and published articles, dated where older. Train times are timetabled times from Network Rail schedule data for the autumn 2026 timetable, not live running. Events come from the organisers and the main local listings. Useful numbers come from nhs.uk, East Kent Hospitals, Canterbury City Council, Kent County Council and the organisations themselves. School details come from Ofsted, the Department for Education's school register, Kent County Council and the schools' own sites; always read the latest report.
