The good

  • Both of the town's designated bathing waters, Tankerton and West Beach, were rated Excellent by the Environment Agency for 2025.
  • London St Pancras in about 79 minutes on the hourly direct Highspeed train, with another direct train every hour to Victoria.
  • Plenty is free: the castle gardens, the Horsebridge exhibitions, The Street at low tide, Tankerton Slopes and the 52 acres of Duncan Down.
  • The museum is free for residents of CT1 to CT6 and for under-19s.
  • A largely traffic-free route to Canterbury on foot or by bike: the Crab and Winkle Way, 7.6 miles through Blean Woods, about three quarters of it away from traffic.
  • A real local calendar: the oyster festival in September, the Regatta on Tankerton Slopes in August and the Playhouse pantomime.

Worth knowing before you move

  • The central town beach is the busiest, and much of it is privately owned by the Whitstable Oyster Fishery Company; the public may use it with the company's permission, so follow the local notices. West Beach is quieter in summer.
  • Town centre car parks charge around the clock, from £1.90 to £3.80 an hour, and there is no free parking by the Horsebridge and the central seafront.
  • There is no A&E in Whitstable or Canterbury: the nearest is at the QEQM in Margate. Estuary View's urgent treatment centre covers 8am to 8pm every day.
  • Lifeguards patrol Tankerton from May to September only; the town beach and West Beach are unpatrolled.
  • The tides catch people out every year, especially on The Street, and Whitstable RNLI had answered 43 calls by early August 2026.
  • Kent is selective, and the grammar schools in this guide are in Canterbury and Faversham. The Kent Test is sat in September of Year 6.
